Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

i'll suggest re-check the setup again

you said:

"...with more intricate classical material, the subtlety and refinement necessary is lacking...."

"...I don't get drawn into the music the way I'd like to be..."

"...I want to hear instruments spread out (this may speak to the room itself) and generally I want everything to breath and not be so forced..."

however, there are still many pieces of puzzel missing here.

questions we could ask you are:

1. first of all, we don't know when you were talking about sense of "involvement", "subtlety and refinement" lacking in the sound reproduction, were you talking about vinyl playback or digital playback?

2. have you correctly set the vta/vtf on your vinyl playback system?
tell us more....

3. have you ever considered using a dedicated optical disc player to play digital music?
what were you using before going the pc audio route?

you also mention something about the sound needing to breathe.
we are assuming you are refering to the soundstaging projection.
maybe the soundstage projected by the system, when playing grand symphony materials is not realistically sized?
experience tell us that soundstaging is the first to suffer when source playback is compromised by cross-pollution. however, we didn't get to see the way the analog and digtal sources are setup.

thus, questions:

4. are your digital devices (pc and dac) switched on when you're playing vinyl?

5. is your turntable's power supply in the same power grid as the rest of the audio system?

6. is anything sitting on top of your digital devices that may change the damping characteristics?

7. what sort of digital interface is being used between pc and dac?

8. what sort of data resolution are being used for your digital playback?

9. How do you rip your classical music?
(ripping software, procedures and steps during ripping)

10. by chance, are any of your interconnect cables and speaker cables and ac powercords bounded up together to make them look more neater in this very nice looking room?
