Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

What are your listening habits?

After reviewing more replies and your additional room details posted on Room Acoustics, it seems more information would be helpful to suggest answers. Mainly, how do you listen? What percentage of your listening is done from the living area sofa compared to elsewhere in your apartment? Do you differentiate between active (concentrated) listening and casual (background) listening? Are you concerned with sound quality throughout your living space or mainly just when you are seated in front of your speakers?

Before posting my suggestion to start with your room first, I considered a response like Duke's (except his was better stated and more complete than I could have made) to look at narrow-pattern speakers. But then I wondered how much listening you do behind the living room area and off to the right? That's why I suggested starting with some room improvements first. And by the way, not all treatments need be ugly and obtrusive. Larger rugs (suggested by others too), plants, acoustic absorption material covered by patterned cloth within a simple box frame to hang on the walls, more bookcases or record storage to break up large reflective areas, etc. may all help.

Looking at your details on Room Acoustics, it was amusing to find you do have a grand piano after reading Duke's comment on that potential. So not unrelated, how does that sound to you?
