I think you'll be okay - especially if you consider used. Some guys treat their gear with as much care as their own kids (or more!) so for audiophile speakers, it's very possible to get a deal. $10K speakers for $6K can get you into a whole other level.
As far as the columns and sprinkler lines go...
Guest: "Ooooh. Interesting color on the column and sprinkler lines."
You: "Oh, you like it?"
Guest: "Well..."
You: "Yeah, me and the wife went through 4 other colors before finally landing on that one."
Guest: "Really?"
You: "No. It was here when we moved in! DUH! Ha ha ha."
