I avoided suggesting easy fixes because

it is a complex subject.

Yes, thick area rugs may help some but with a coffee table between the listening seat and the speakers that benefit may be questioned. Also, placing a wool rug on the wall may help too (I use one on a side wall) but with that large, flat-screen TV between the speakers at ear level I'm doubtful it would help much in this case.

General acoustic treatments may only affect general change. With this room I believe specific remedies are called for.
