RE: Skylan Stands: alternate mass damping

No you don't need to take any special precautions with the rice as you purchase it in a sealed package. we are talking about a food grade product. Noel's stands are a very tight seal around the posts even the finest sand blasting sand does not seep out. Noel provides clear plastic film disk with an adhesive backing to cover and seal the holes after the column is filled and that's all you need. The fill is dry and clean so nothing will grow. If you are out of the factory film disks you can use a small piece of packing tape to do the job. If you wanted you could just as easily use dried lentils or similar rather than the rice. The interesting part of all of this is that you can play with the filling material to make any number of mass and damping combination's. You want the mass to be as high as possible and the fill material size and shape will determine the amount of particle friction you will get (hence the the amount of energy loss or damping). The rice is an excellent combination for a speakers such as the Harbeth's and other thin wall cabinets (Spedor's ect). There are all kinds of other items which are inexpensive and easy to find which could be substituted for the rice such as barley wheat corn lentils all manner of seed. We chose to use rice in our experiment since it is probably the most universally available and suitable product. The fact that it provides an excellent combination of damping and mass with full columns just makes it exceptionally simple for the end user. Hopes this is helpful.
