Have you tried biamping using the internal crossovers.
When I bought my 805 Matrix speakers recently, I noticed that biamping using the internal crossovers brought about a big improvement with the amps I had on hand at the time.
I have noticed this provides significant improvement with many speakers but with the B&Ws it was particularly noticeable. As it has been audible even at very low levels, my guess is that the primary reason is that neither amp has to deal with the complex phase and impedance shifts associated with their high order crossover.
Here are a few reasons to try this first if you have not yet done so:
- All of the reasons discussed below by Presto
- I understand that it is what B&W recommend, presumably for the reasons discussed by Presto
- It costs you nothing to try this first even if you later go on to try to design and build an outboard low level crossover that is equal to or better than the high level one designed and tested by B&W.
What you will need is a second amp of equal or adjustable gain and of suitable quality. This is however something you will need anyway if you go to an external crossover.
