I recently bought a mint pair for less than your price range and I find them good on the music I listen to including lots of classical.
I don't have them on bookshelves but I do have them quite close to the wall and I believe that they were designed with studio wall mounting in mind.
They have surprising bass and you may or may not feel the need for a sub depending on your room and what you like to listen to.
One word of caution is that they sound much better on some amps than others. I don't know if this is because they are hard to drive or if its because they reveal upstream problems. I'm running them on a Creek 5350SE and I like the combination.
