RE: Skylan stands

I just received my Harbeth Super HL5 custom Skylans with 4 posts two weeks ago. I had the speakers on Ikea wooden tables (per Alan Shaw's quirky recommendation from Harbeth forums) while waiting for the proper stands... although the sound was fine on these (Harbeths aren't too picky about stands) on the Skylans, it was as if I had been listening to flawed speakers before. The sound improved dramatically. The bass didn't boom or float away, became musical & sonorous. More surprising were the mid/treble response - it's as if the speakers' sound became finely honed. Worth every penny, in my book, especially considering they are significantly cheaper than Sound Anchors.

Noel from Skylan recommended kitty litter, so I used it. But you have to make sure to purchase the heavy, clay version, not the fancy, more expensive paper-based ones or crystal ones. The brand I used is Purina Tidy Cats or something, and I could see why Noel recommends these. Very heavy. Nicely sanitized & treated vs. moisture. I know some people get gourmet sand and bake in the oven. Power to those people, but frankly, I feel that's more for their peace of mind than a real performance translation. I'm completely happy with the results I got w/ kitty litter.

I filled the stands up after I built them, used filling holes. Yeah, it does take a bit of time, but it's not so bad. When they're filled near the top, continue to shake the stands side to side a bit, though, make the cat litter settle so you can pour in as much as you can. For mine, I used approximately 45 lbs or so?

Anyway, hope you enjoy your speaker/stand combo. As for me, I can't imagine listening to my Harbeths w/o Skylans.
