Yes, I believe you are right about the resonance at different frequencies, which was my (unexpressed) point. All materials vibrate, all at different frequencies, and all stress different qualities of a given speaker. That's why I think ruling out metal stands as a group is wrong. What matters is how a particular stand sounds with your speaker. There's a gorgeous-looking (and, I'm sure, gorgeous-sounding) Harbeth setup in the picture gallery (sorry, I forgot whose) using what looks like molded concrete stands. I would really love to try those.
