You could use an upholstery batting and ram it (tamp?) into the stands.
Use a stick to really push it down. You will achieve great damping without any significant mass. When you say that the new "deep" bass extended into the vocal range I started thinking that you might be hearing something of a mid bas and that kind of bloating is often connected to either the results of mass loading the stands or to some kind of floor vibration.
If you could and I don't know your exact set up... try placing something... soft between the speakers and the stands, even just some Blu Tak then you might and I repeat might find that this clears up leaving a deeper quicker leaner bottom end.
This sometimes sounds a little bass light for a few minutes if you are used to having your speakers directly connected to your floor and causing a BOOM from the resonance of either the floor itself or the airspace under it, but give it a few tracks and you might well find you have a clearer deeper bass.
