With all the advances in crossover and driver design there has to be lots of modern speakers that fill the requirements.
The best I have owned are B&W DM12. Very smooth, warm, and clear. They were very well made and expensive at that time. For 22 lb mini-monitors, they were 30% the cost of 801's when new.
Today they run in the couple hundred dollar range. They are 20 - 25 years old now, But the drvers do not fail due to age. No foam to rot.
