Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Sub-woofer guidance appreciated - NHT and general

I have a couple of pairs of speakers I like (Snell K and Mission 753) that could benefit from more bass extension and I have the opportunity to try out an NHT SW2P (passive subwoofer with matching MA-1A crossover/amplifier).

I appear to have the options to adjust crossover point (35 – 150 hz), adjust sub volume, use high level or low level inputs, and run the speakers full range or through the high pass crossover. I’m not sure of the slopes on the high pass and low pass crossovers or how the single adjustment affects the two crossovers.

When I add speaker and sub placement, there are far more things to adjust than I will have time to try so I could use some guidance.

In setting the sub up and assessing the results:
- What configurations should I try?
- Exactly should I be listening for?
- What is good music to highlight the things I should be concerned about?

Can anyone provide more info on the NHT SW2P and MA-1A?

I predominantly listen to classical piano, jazz and female vocal. Secondary uses include other classical music, miscellaneous other music and soundtracks from DVDs or TV.

I have read a bit on the web but cannot recall anything that answered my questions.

Any advice or links on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

David
