I would assume that you would hear audible distortion long before damage could occur.

Why don't you email Quad and explain the problem. If they send something back that says "no problem" or how to avoid a problem then you have something to send to the salesman. If he still won't budge then I'd imagine that Quad woulkd be glad to find a different dealer for you (and for them).
