...for the 99%-Classical and big-orchestra music I listen to. My SETs were/are ASL 805s. The 989/805 combination had plenty of power, bass, and dynamic range for me (and Art Dudley too; see the linked review) in my c. 3200CF room. The 989s are VERY transparent and coherent, that is all of 'one cloth'. NOTHING sticks out--it's just music. And I should say now that I LOVE the spaciousness of dipoles. So why did I trade them for Eminent Technology 8s and at-least-120-Watt (in triode) ASL Hurricanes? Because I couldn't tweak the Quads, and for this incorrigible tweak, that was VERY frustrating. Read here http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/MUG/messages/83818.html about my dilema.
I agree with others that they'll need more than 3' of space behind them--more like 5 or 6'. Because they're dipoles (read '2-poles'), they radiate very little to the sides so can be placed close to sidewalls.
Take him and his amps and go listen--I'll bet he'll love them...I sure did and still do.
