Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Quad 989 for Classical?

If there are any speakers at all you should listen to, it is the Quads given your friends budget and musical preferences.

He might not like them but there is a real chance that he will like them so much that he will be no longer interested in anything else.

As one poster said, when knowledgeable stereo salesmen find out that he has the original ESL 57 Quads, their reaction is "I guess that I won't be selling you any speakers then." How many speakers that are about 50 years old could you say this about?

That said, there are a few things to consider.

There is no hiding them. They have a large face area and need to be out from the back wall.

While they can sound very good on the right moderately priced amp, (and superb on a better one) they are not an easy load and not all otherwise good amps will handle them. Maybe the Cary amps will be great but I don't know. You would want to try it. There is a possibility that he will like them so much that he will change the amp if he has to.

Adverse effects from sidewalls are less than with many speakers but the optimum listening area is small.

Quads are one of the few speakers where someone in the next room might think they are hearing live music.

If he likes them and is into music rather than equipment, he will likely keep them for the rest of his life.

They may not grab your attention like other speakers. They may just sound subtly right and you may just find yourselves listening to the music, not the speakers

I still wish that I had bought Quads when I was first getting into stereo and one of these days, I probably will.

If you listen to them, I will be interested to hear what you think.

Regards

David
