You would be correct, if I listened at 85dB average. However, I do not, I lie somewhere between 75dB and 80dB for average listening levels, thus providing me with peaks of over 15dB, which is sufficient for the vast majority of music. My amp can actually produce more than 10 watts but by then THD is at 3% or so and while it's somewhat 'pleasant' distortion (second order) upto that point, beyond that the odd order harmonics start to became readily apparent. So I say 8 watts is the reasonable limit.Of course, add to all this the fact that SET amps (and tubes in general) can actually deliver a lot more current than it's rated spec for those quick transients and I'm reasonably comfortable with my listening levels (about 2.5m away from speakers set 2.1m apart).
