Thanks for the responses everyone!

So if the reason the bass part of a speaker is hard to drive is impedence/phase reactivity, would that mean if the impedence and phase wasn't reactive at those frequencies, i.e. generally flat, then the bass would be no more difficult to drive than higher frequencies?

So is the reason people filter (i.e. high-pass) the bass into a subwoofer to relieve amplifier load simply done so that the amplifier doesn't 'see' the widely varying impedence and phase that tend to occur at bass frequencies?
