Re: A fair comparison:

thanks ian,
but even more to the point is that the orginal price of the vsm at $4500 was a very basic version and did not include the bam. we also made it perfectly clear that this was a very limited production to test the water to see if there was demand and that we were not making enough profit so prices would go up. when the rcs and the bam were added, the price immediately went to $6000. this model was called the genIII rc/bam and it sold up until 1997. so if you are comparing apples to apples, the price went up $1700 over an 8 to 9 year period. and during that time we designed new inductors, use a completely different and proprietery crossover and parts, offered new feet, jumpers, new cabinets materials, new cabinet construction, port alignment, proprietery wiring, battery upgrades for the bam and numerous other improvements.
the actual markup to make the mm a 30% better speaker than the m was a walloping, $250. this included further refinements and cryogenic treatment of critical parts. from 2000 to 2004, the price went up $400. as i said, in the last 5 years the price has gone up 10%.
there is much more here than meets the eye but to be sure we do not have a big profit margin nor have we marked up to cover rising costs. I have said many times on this site that we mark up 3.6 times to retail. the dealer makes more money than we do. and i can honestly tell you that this mark up is the lowest i know of in this field and that my accountant constantly tells me i am nuts for not charging more.
so there you have it. you can be dam sure that if some of the other companies manufactured this product, it would retail for as much as double. and never consider the mx in the comparison because it costs thousands of dollars more to build.
the bam is more than an eq. it is also a very important and specific filter device and if all speaker systems used such a filter, they would suffer from less distortion...period. those who suffer from preconception simply say that eqs are bad, nothing should be in the signal path. but 99% or more that have heard it, use it and love it. the proof is in the pudding but you should be the judge.
regards,
b
