Re: Looking for comments on Living Voice Avatar speakers (or others in the line)

I heard them several times during a Hi-Fi show, listened to my own CDs and pointed out to the distributor that they need at least 9 feet of listening distance to become coherent.
Sound quality on the front row seats was dismal.
I actually helped the guy move all the chairs to the back of the room. Now they sounded much better, but IMHO they are not special as compared to other Scanspeak equipped speakers.

"* Are the Avatars really picky about placement to sound good?
All speakers are..

*Can they be close to the rear wall at all?
NO, the bass will certainly boom, as most modern free-standing speakers are designed to be placed away from the back wall.

* What about off-axis listening? Good?
The tweeter has excellent off-axis response.

* I understand they are good at low volumes. True?
True as with most speakers made with Scanspeak drivers.

* i get the impression they are good with all types of music. True?
They were uninvolving on orchestral music (maybe due to mismatch with the associated components: Bel Canto digital amps, MSB DAC).
I have heard much finer music from Proac, Spendor and Quad speakers, if you are looking for british-made speakers.
In fact, I have NEVER heard a bad Proac, Spendor or Quad speaker.
If you want to buy american, Thiel, Revel and Merlin sound very musical to my ears.

Sorry to rain on your parade...just my opinion.
(BTW I do not make or sell speakers)
