Re: McIntosh LS-360 Speakers

Karl,

The LS360 is the only model out of the new McIntosh speaker line that has to have it's grill installed for proper response. With no grill they will have a ragged response on the high end and the midrange will be down in level.
The grill loads the mid which brings its volume up some what like a phase plug. The five tweeter bessel array needs the grill because it is a wave guide for the two outside tweeters so they do not see the cabinet edge and have diffraction. If you look at the grill you will see what I mean around the tweeters. Behind the grill the frame forms a very shallow horn guide for the two outside tweeters. If the cabinet extended out 4 or more inches on the sides we would not need the grill.
I have had the LS360s for some time and they are a very good speaker. They were designed to be angled in so you are on axis and 12 feet back was also assumed. The LS360s are easy to drive and will work with any amp, I use a 75 watt tube amp on mine. The 360 can play at levels in excess of 110 Db with very low distortion if you use the largest amps. The five tweeter array is a true 500 watt tweeter which is thermally stable and uses a large heatsink attached to the five magnet structures. Thermal compression is not an issue with this design.
You may want to audition the speakers again with the grills installed.
Thank you,
Ron-C
