The main difference between DIY and commercial gears (most of which are made by small companies btw) is, literally, quantity. DIY is assembled in single (or a couple) for personal use, commercial - in a bulk for continuous sale and profit. Apart from this, everything else is just an engineering and assembly with parts available from component distributors. There are few custom parts PCBs, transformers, chassis, but they can be ordered from a number of specialized manufacturers.
Schematics? The main problem there are just TOO MANY to choose from.

1) In audio "Better" is a matter of taste.
2) A few reference components available in a circle of friends is enough.
Since most of DIY'ers are skilled engineers, not snake oil "businessman", they don't need earth magnetic field optimizers, $5,000 cryogenic treated power cords, $20,000 RCA interconnect, etc.
