Single Ended Triodes (SETs), the ultimate tube lovers dream.

Type 833 Transmitting Triode

Don, hi. I think I heard the amp that inspired Win - namely the WAVAC 833. In fact the man who originated the circuit, the late Nobu Shishido, was the one who told me about it and asked me to hear it. Google WAVAC and cruise around. Shishido uses the Inverted Interstage circuit where an interstage transformer couples the driver ( a beam tube in this case - 6550/KT-88 in the WAVAC) to the output grid. This allows the 833 to draw grid current. Shishido wanted to use the tubes that are really not designed for audio use for audio. The IIT makes it possible. Looks like Win uses a Sheet Beam tube as well. This novel circuit is also the catch. so to speak. Think about it. Beam Tube needed to drive a Triode. The sound of any amp in large part can be and is many times the sound of the driver. Not to make a federal case out of it but that's the rub. Does the Beam Tube make the 833 sound more like a Beam Tube than a Triode? That's one for the ages. Make no mistake though. The originator of the circuit was Shishido. The RCA 833 is a mighty tube all right - tantalum plates that become cherry red during normal operation. This aids in gettering. No fears. The Tantalum anode is tough and can take it. Check out Tantalum's melting temperature. I used to have an 833 on my desk. My late brother-in-law gave it to me to make a night light. No kidding. See out how much current it draws. I nixed the night light idea.
