Morgan Jones quotes Henderson 1943 (2nd ed) to the effect that the mesh anode "prevents the grid becoming overheated by reflected radiation". Presumably the space between the coarse mesh allows radiation cooling of the grid.
Clearly, it was not done in the twenties so that audiophiles could swoon over the subtle elegance of the eigensonics! :^)
