RE: Moth Audio

itisnotfree, hi. The early Moth amps have a 5AR4 rectifier inside the amp and horizontal. Later ones have the 5AR4 topside. This is a better location for heat dissipation. These amps are cathode biased and the cathode power resistors are mounted under the louvers directly under the output tubes. This makes for a very hot box situation for all components.
The filaments for all tubes are DC with regulated supplies and big heat sinks on each. All these heat producing elements are enclosed when the top plate is in place. Convection cooling is poor. The parts near the heat producing elements (electrolytic capacitors in particular) are subject to very high operating temperatures which in my book translates to cooking the parts. One could mount an external fan between the power tubes to continuously pull air out of the chassis. I think it is mandatory for reliability considerations. Also - the full wave bridges on the 2.5 V regulators may be failure prone. I have seen post manufacture changes of these parts done in a particularly sloppy and unsafe way. Some Moth amps used Jack Eliano's excellent output transformers (Electra-Print Audio) and I say bravo. Hope this helps. Happy Listening.
