Paul et al, hi. I believe the line would have shut down if the defect rate even approached something like 75% until the problem was solved. My guess is the reject rate was under 2%. WECO might have had high standards but really. I think the destruct number you mention (3/4 of all 300B produced!) is crazy high. It may be confused with WECO's standing rules regarding obsoleted parts. Nothing went into the dumpster that could be salvaged by later dumpster diving. I personally know a former WE employee who was directed to smash tubes in their boxes with a hammer all of one afternoon prior to disposal. This destruction was not just 300B of course. When I informed him of the value wasted by this company policy he just about keeled over. It wasn't until AT&T was split from Bell in the early 80's that the final push to eliminate tubes from the operating systems happened.
