the low mu 45 - ne plus ultra

Andy, hi. The 45 is remarkable. I think of it as the truth teller. I don't have any direct experience with currently manufactured ones. My experience is with ST and Globe varieties NOS & OS. It wants a 5K load. The only rival to the 45 is the Type 50. Full Music (TJ - see DIY HIFI site for these & take the factory picture tour) makes a 50. I haven't tried the TJ 50 yet but plan to do so soon. I have heard rumblings a 50 may emerge from a well known manufacturer in the Slovak Republic. I hope this is the case as their 2A3 and 300B are excellent. Choosing between the 45 and the 50 - that's a tough choice. In some ways I think the 50 just may take the cake. This may be splitting hairs. There are other variables at work. I have home brews with SET 2A3, parallel 300B, SET 300B, in addition to the 45 and 50 ones. The 45 produces a spectrally balanced sound that seems to be "just right" for the human ear. The 50 is a 45 sibling - equally magnificent. The 2A3 is a first cousin - very pleasing in its own way and quite delightful. The 300B tends to go Technicolor (a bit oversaturated chroma & drama) but with the right power supply and output transformer it is a mighty musical seducer. Parallel 300B gives about 21 Watts Class A - nice if you need the power. Hope this gives you some food for thought. Happy listening!
