Unplugging the power plant frequently

Hi Paul,
According to what I've read that even if the PP is plugged in and off, it still consumes about 50 watt, which translates to 438 Kwh/yr and about $55/yr and that's just one person's component. I'm not too thrill about keeping it plugged in all the time and wasting earth's valuable resources which just turns into heat. Is it ok to plug/unplug frequently for the PP? Just wondering if it is a shock to the components innards and would reduce its life. Thanks.
