This is the one area in which everyone agrees that big differences abound: transducers. Any time you convert one kind of energy to another, there are subjective effects. An around-the-ear headphone is much better at shutting out extraneous sounds and one with extended HF response will be more revealing in a test like this, as will one (like the Sony I used) with a slight presence peak. I had the impression, FWIW, that the distorted tracks were slightly brighter overall, and small response differences everyone tends to spot, even me. I didn't record the signals and measure them, though. -- E. Brad
