RE: Yes, stick with me and ...

"Yes, stick with me and after maybe 5-6 more addendums you'll have the makings of a respectible [sic] report!"

bjh (or whatever your real name is)

I need to address one thing at this juncture: I am not answering to you in any of this, only trying to judge for myself what additional information might be useful to others who are evaluating our work in good faith.

It is clear to me, and to many others here it seems (thanks, folks), that you are relentlessly suspicious of us, and have responded to everything we have written or said on the assumption that we conducted our work not in a spirit of honest inquiry but as some sort of corrupt exercise. I am not going to address that tacit accusation, which does not deserve, and will not get, one shred of my serious attention.

Your strident demand that we produce detailed information on exactly who did our listening tests is a good example. How many of our subjects were Boston Audio Society members, you ask, clearly ready to pounce on us for something. Did they deliberately fail the test because of my Svengali-like evil influence over them? If you knew what a cantankerous and independent lot they are, you'd see how laughable that is. Except of course that the last time you demanded to know that, you said "AES members" instead, an idea that is even more bizarre.

If you suspect that maybe we are reluctant to list the names and addresses of our subjects, well, you've got at least one thing right. But it seems not to have occurred to you that someone seriously engaged in this field might not want to be so identified. Anyone who takes our test is in some sense putting a reputation on the line, even if only to the few people in the room. It is a courageous thing to do and we are not about to reward this courage by betraying their confidence in us. This is even true of the students in the University of Massachusetts professional recording program, who were keen listeners and asked helpfully sharp questions about what we were doing. They're going to have to get work out there, too.

That will seem coy and evasive to you, I expect, which troubles me not at all, since you have so far reacted that way to everything we have done. I have no doubts about the integrity and merit of our work, and the responses of serious hobbyists and those in the industry whom I do respect confirm this.

So you might say I consider you the relentlessly disloyal opposition. I will continue to sift through the comments of you and others like you for the occasional good idea, and do my best to ignore your insults, implied and expressed. -- E. Brad Meyer
