RE: Here's one more issue to consider....

Good question.

The usual standard that is applied to these tests of raw audibility is the 95% criterion. This means there is less than a 5% chance that a set of answers arose by chance. We asked all our subjects to do at least 7 or 8 trials, as time and their patience allowed. For many we have 10 to 15 trials, or more, with different source material.

Minimum scores that satisfy the 95% criterion for low numbers of trials are: 5/5 correct, 6/6, 7/7, 7/8, 8/9, 9/10, 9/11, 10/12, 10/13. The positive results, where we could hear the noise level of one particular very quiet recording with the gain up, were 12/12 and 15/15 listening just to X with no need to compare it with A and B. That describes an easy test. The line between that and null results, it turns out, is quite sharp. There were virtually no scores in the region where you have to consider the possibility of type II error (vide Leventhal) -- scores like 7/9 and 6/8 didn't occur at a rate greater than chance (that is, at a similar rate to ones like 3/9 and 2/8, which are rare for the same reason).
