Thanks for your reply. I agree with almost all of your take on blind testing. The original ABX box was designed to test differences that its makers heard, but wanted to check. Some of these differences proved audible, and some, to their dismay and eventual enlightenment, did not.

It is not, however, a requirement for anyone to report differences before the blind portion of the test. We found that the more experienced and trained the subject, the more he or she was able to say that there really was no difference between two sources -- in other words, to predict the outcome of the blind test. It is possible to learn to identify the strong tendency of the ear and brain to experience differences (which has happened to all of us, certainly including me) whether or not they exist.
