RE: That clears up a lot!

Thanks for the note. I don't know what else the Carver amp was or wasn't doing. The Audio Research output Z may well have been non-flat or otherwise complex itself. The speaker was an Infinity, expensive enough to have been voiced by Nudell himself, and Arnie was known to favor that brand of amp. We may have been using the very component he did. The strange impedance curve of the speakers made that more critical for this speaker than with many others. But the basic principle -- at least try the amp the designer used, if you can -- seems like a good idea, especially for high-end designs.

What's ironic is that you just know a lot of high-end dealers were saying, "This speaker is more revealing than less expensive ones, so you can tell the difference between power amps." The other speakers do not fail to reveal that difference, they fail to produce it. -- E. Brad
