Actually, finding microvolt level signals in a magnet with 10 kiloamps running through and peak fields of 5 to 10 Tesla, is a rather strange combination of high power and low noise, low level signal capability.....especially within a cryogenic environment. The inability to find the low level signal while power is applied results in complete and utter destruction of the unit under test..the cheapest UUT I've built recently was a quarter million dollars of hardware.
There are times when .1% of a coupla megajoules does indeed represent a significant amount of energy, so understanding the physics is a key component of success.
For normal power use, .1% is insignificant in the scheme of things, 10% of all the electrical power generated on this planet is lost to heat via the distribution lines.
