RE: what is this 'dr' measurement?

It's a measurement of dynamic range... You can read all about it here:

The Foobar2000 plugin works well.

With 24-bits, the LEAST I expect is good dynamic range given that there's 140+dB to play with. Realistically, DR 10 is being very generous. For a good rock recording I'd love to see DR12+ and jazz/classical DR15+.
