Yup. With you there Roseval... No reason to do anything extreme or purchase any special "audiophile" software to tweak OS - often just asking for trouble getting too fancy!- SILENT computer. Ideally completely FANLESS. Quiet hard drives if you're not on a NAS where the drives can be in another room.
- Clean Windows install.
- Proper drivers for the hardware. ASIO/WASAPI preferred for bit-perfect playback.
- Good reputable player that takes advantage of the above drivers (personally foobar and JRiver have been a staple for years).
- Fast enough processor for the intended purpose especially if you're doing fancy stuff like upsampling, implementing computationally intensive filters, DSP like room correction, on-the-fly DSD to PCM conversions, etc.
- Enough RAM for a good sized buffer to prevent under-runs. It'll be obvious if there's a problem.
- Robust data communication especially for hi-res, high data rate audio. I purposely put in a wired ethernet to my soundroom for access to NAS. Obviously a good signal WiFi might be enough so long as its reliable.
- Keep the computer far enough away to prevent potential electrical/RF interference.
