RE: Playing music files directly from a NAS.

If the plugs are not polarized then sometimes a hum problem can be made to go away by reversing the polarity of one or more AC plugs.

I would never accept a stereo system that has any amount of audible hum or any amount of audible noise when playing a silent digital track. I haven't had any of these kinds of problems with my present system, because it has only five components that are normally powered up: PC, USB DAC, two powered Focal monitors, one powered Focal subwoofer. The analog input of the Focals are +4dBu balanced XLRs for full power output which gives about 118 dB at my listening position. No hum and I can not hear any hiss either with a silent track unless I put my ear right up to a tweeter.

I forgot that I added a 6th component, an iUSB3.0 that goes between my PC and my DAC. It did not make any change to noise levels.
