Use digital volume control in the computer to attenuate the signal goint to the DAC. Make up the difference by turning up the volume control (in the DAC if it has one or in your preamp). You will find a tradeoff between noise and distortion according to which volume control you turn down and which you turn up. More turning the computer down means less analog distortion from the DAC (if it is really 24 bit) but more noise. Fiddle with the settings until you find the sweet spot for your system.
This is a free and easy tweak and it works on many systems.
