RE: NOS DAC

If you want a good comparison of real time vs. non-real time, then you need to use the same upsampling algorithm in both cases. Depending on how your software works, this can be difficult. In particular some real-time software, such as HQPlayer, is configured to operate only in real time. There is probably a way to bypass this, by using some kind of digital loopback. For example, if you send digital via SPDIF you can probably capture the SPDIF and record it on another computer, or another interface on the same computer if you have two sound cards. There may be other ways of accomplishing this, such as ASIO proxies, or other shim software that can capture a stream and send it to a file.

Based on tests that I did (some years ago) I wouldn't want to claim that any differences I heard were due to real time vs. non-realtime until I had first satisfied myself that the identical bitstreams were being compared. Different filters produce different bitstreams and this is a first order effect (in that they can be gross if there were gross differences in the filtering).

Differences due to realtime vs non-realtime are a second order effect (in that they depend on system dependent factors including power and signal cabling and other "bits are not just bits" issues).
