I've ripped all of my CDs. However, I have more digital recordings that never were on CD, including downloads and recordings I've digitized myself from analog. I also lack sufficient room to keep my CDs accessible, so they are in storage. Hence, one way or the other, I have a requirement for reliable backup. It is quite easy, and requires little thought or effort once the procedure is in effect. Certainly less daily work than brewing a cup of coffee... Every few years, it becomes advisable to upgrade disks, replacing older disks before they wear out and fail with new larger disks. So there is a little effort involved here, but it's no more work than moving CDs around when rearranging furniture.
I seldom listen to my system to "test" it. I use it to listen to music and as a tool to create new recordings (mostly digitizations of analog recordings). The only time when I resort to "testing" is I need to replace a component due to failure or impending old age, or when I have a strong belief that I will be able to get better sound by updating / upgrading. So it would be effectively useless for me to have a small collection of recordings that I could play all the time. There would be no point, since I could probably play them in my mind without even using the system. :-)
