It's not so easy to "test". The problem is that the differences are small, and it is easy to be mistaken in one's conclusions. One can not easily switch back and forth and do the necessary number of comparisons to reach reliable conclusions, because one has to swap cables, tweak boxes, power cables, power supplies, etc...
In my case, I have to get up from my listening position and when I sit down again I am not in the same mood as before, possibly even cursing if I had to grovel around chasing power wiring, and probably not sitting in the same exact location as before which also changes sound quality. My goal is to make decisions that reflect actual improvements in sound quality, not just impress myself and my friends with how acute my hearing seems to be. I know that my hearing is not as acute as it was 50 years ago. :-(
