My position has been that "bits should be bits". It is up to the individual to decide the extent to which this has been achieved. If one's goal, as mine is, is to enjoy music then one does not have to obsess over differences being debated here. If one is more interested in playing with equipment or discussing equipment, then one may reach other conclusions.
My experience as been that it is possible to reach the point where further tweaks to one's computer system are insignificant compare to differences between recordings, or even moving ones head a few inches from side to side or back and forth. The differences are likely to be greater between two adjacent seats in the same concert hall at a live concert.
