RE: Since CD players were made

I had two Compact Jazz compilation CDs from around 1990 that developed rot. All the other CDs that had problems ripping were given to me and had been seriously abused. This week I got a brand new (sealed) CD that was made in India and it wouldn't read, but a good wipe down with a cloth cured the problem.

I'm not sure that brand names mean anything in HD these days, with the complex acquisition of hard drive companies. I think the problems may depend on the designers and the manufacturing plants as much as anything. I have had Seagate and WD drives fail, but no Hitachi's as yet. But I only have a few Hitachi drives. (Now I see that WD has acquired Hitachi's hard drive business.)
