I've lost data on CDs due to pit rot and scratches. I've lost data on CD-Rs from playing in cars and heat. I've not lost data stored on hard drives because I keep multiple backups, some off site. Keeping these backups is a mild pain, but less than the difficulty of storing CDs, finding them, moving them when you move house, etc...
