RE: Distorted sound after waking from sleep/hibernate

The solution is quite simple: leave the computer on 24/7. That is what I do. If you are worried about electricity consumption, then get a low powered computer.

I assume you are hearing stuttering or buffer overrun/underrun type of problems. One common reason for this on Windows systems has to do with background processes. There are many. Use the Windows task manager to see what is running. (You will have to select the option to show all processes.) Look at processer ustilization, page faults, and I/O reads and writes. Become familiar with the characteristics of your system when audio is playing well so that you will recognize which processes are screwing up your audio.

Windows schedules many background tasks periodically. If the computer is asleep or hibernating these may not be able to run, so when you resume operation they start to do their business at a time when you least want it. Some of these (e.g. backup) can be scheduled for the middle of the night and it may be possible for "wake from sleep" functionality to be enabled. Other things are background virus scanning tasks (e.g. Windows Defender), Windows update, etc...

You can spend hours tracking this down, and it will take hours or more because the problems are elusive and you can never really tell when they are gone. Or you can just leave the computer on 24/7. Of course, it goes without saying that all the background tasks that you can strip out will reduce the problems, or at least places where you have to look for solutions.
