A digital voltmeter put on the speaker wires may be better than a SPL meter if your concern is DAC output. Or, better, if put on the analog outputs of the DAC. You will need a test file, e.g. a 1000 Hz sine wave at -12 dBfs. However, these "objective" measurements are not necessarily related to the "subjective" perception of loudness, if other factors come into play other than system gain.

If you gbet different perceptions when two identical inputs are put through your system, then it logically follows that there is a difference somewhere. It could be that your equipment has changed. Or it could be that you have changed. Part of the adventure is to figure out the true cause of differences that were heard.
