Here's the deal. It's quite simple.
Case 1. compromised source + compromised cable + REGEN
Case 2. SOTA source + SOTA cable
If they sound the same, then pick whichever costs the least. If they sound different, then pick whichever sounds best that you can afford. Or perhaps, you should try
Case 3. compromised source + compromised cable + two REGENS at the DAC. Note: It may be that there will still be a benefit from the SOTA source, either because there is some "badness" that get through the two REGENS or because there is some other mechanism that couples "badness", e.g. power wiring.
Putting the "blame" on the DAC or the source is not a religious issue. It is a pragmatic issue. If you like the results of the REGEN, but don't like the outboard dongle in back of your DAC, then blame the DAC manufacturer, who could have bundled the REGEN inside the box.
