RE: Turned my 10 year old laptop into a NAS using USB drives with openmediavault

From the link it looks like a web based user interface to existing (Debian) Linux operating system software.

If you are prepared to use a Linux command line interface then you can make full Linux distros into just about any type of device you want, router, web server, NAS, you name it. However, this will require a lot of Linux experience as well as experience in the particular functions you want the box to perform. Hence, the existence of these specialized interfaces. (Indeed, my Thecus NAS is built on Linux with a web UI and can be hacked via secure shell access.)

I use my NAS primarily for file backup. This application requires high performance and good reliability. If the application is just to serve a music library to streamers then reliability and performance may not be critical. However, I would remain skeptical of using an old laptop for this function. (My old laptop dating back to 2001 won't even run newer versions of Ubuntu and LUbuntu due to its aging processor and graphics and it has a tiny fan that keeps the CPU cool, making it a rather toxic device that is presently sitting in a closet collecting dust.)
