"Ethernet was never intended to be used with audio."
Wrong.
Prior to the development of of the research Ethernet at Xerox PARC in 1975 there was already work underway for transmitting audio (voice) over packet switching networks. The designers of the research Ethernet were part of a small community and would have been aware of this. The people who worked on standardizing the public Ethernet (at DEC, Intel and Xerox) were well aware of the possibility (and requirements) for transmitting audio over packet networks, including the Ethernet. (I was one of the people at DEC that developed and wrote the Ethernet standard and I was quite aware of telephony technology and packet voice work at the time (c.1980) as my interest in audio, telephony and networking went back to my college days in the 1960's).
With a little searching I came up with the linked paper from Xerox PARC dated 1981. There are also Internet documents going back as far as 1973 on the subject of packet voice.
