RE: Dedicated Music PC and Internet Security

Anti-Virus programs are not "safe". They provide some protection, but it is not complete. There are many bad things that can happen even with them.

You need to consider the downside of malware on your system. If all your system is doing is playing music files (streaming or downloading) off the net you will have a low risk profile. All that can happen is that you will need to restore the operating system from a backup image and recover your music library. However, if you have confidential customer information on your machine, use it for on-line banking, etc. you will have much more to lose. Also, if you use the machine for email and general web surfing then you will have a much greater attack cross-section than if you use it just to download and play music from reputable sources.

Even Windows Defender can use significant computer resources at times. This can go on even if the user has temporarily "disabled" it. The remaining activity can create sound quality problems, and not just subtle ones at that, especially if the system has been tuned for best sound quality and is using small buffers. Other A/V vendors can be worse. I consider all of this A/V stuff at best a necessary evil.
