Here's how many subjects you need for a proper ABX test.
If it comes up positive, you only need one subject. He passed the test, which means that it is possible for a human to hear the difference between the items tested.
If it comes up negative, you need to test every person in the world. Any even that is not enough, because one of the people who failed might have bad a bad day, needed to have ear wax removed, etc... And even if everyone fails the test, you will still not be able to conclude anything, but that's much harder to explain.
